Diagonal-Besòs Campus

An engine of social and economic transformation

In September 2016, the Diagonal-Besòs Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya BarcelonaTech (UPC), with 3,500 students and 400 teachers and researchers from the School of Engineering of East Barcelona (EEBE), was launched. With a range of degrees, masters and doctorates, focused on all types of engineering: biomedical, electrical, industrial and automatic electronics, energy, mechanics, chemistry and materials. In addition to the teaching activity (7 undergraduate studies, 6 master’s degrees and 4 doctoral programs), the EEBE also has 41 research groups and centers in different fields of engineering (biomedicine, electricity, industrial and automatic, energy, materials, mechanics, chemistry and nanotechnology).

At present, the EEBE is the driving force of the Diagonal-Besòs Campus. This space of innovation and knowledge, located between Barcelona and Sant Adrià de Besòs, is one of the most powerful university campuses in sustainable engineering in Catalonia, with a surface of more than 150,000m² to accommodate teaching, research, innovation, business activity and services to the university community. The Campus has also been set up with the desire to have a significant impact on the territory, and as a prime mover for social and economic transformation.

The first phase of the Campus took place at the School of Engineering of East Barcelona (EEBE) consisting of three buildings: Building A, with 27,979 m2 of surface area, where the teaching activities , services and spaces of management are located, along with 11 research groups in fields such as Electric Power, Power Electronics, Renewable Energies, Multimedia Applications, Mathematics, Mechanics or Bioengineering; Building C, with an area of 11,619 m2, with research centers such as the Center for Science and Multi-Scale Engineering of Barcelona, the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia, the Catalan Institute of Plastic, Astronomy groups and the Microtron, besides the Campus Diagonal Besòs Consortium, and the b_TEC Foundation; and the building I, with 13,202 m2 of surface area, where the groups and research and innovation centers have been located in the fields of Materials (Conformation of Materials, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Structural Integrity, Polymers and Composites) and Chemistry (Process Engineering, Environment, Technology Risk, Separation and Treatment of Industrial Waste).

During 2019 and 2020, a series of actions will be carried out that will allow to consolidate a very powerful Campus with more than 66,000 m² of space for students, research professors, companies and research centers, and 20,000 m² of green space . A new impulse will therefore be given to a project that goes far beyond the initial buildings of the UPC and that makes it a space for interaction between the university community and neighbors, not only be for studying and investigating, but also for living , innovating and developing business and leisure projects.

Thus, during the summer the works of the residence of students and researchers were ended -the fourth building of the Campus (building H – that will promote the internationalization and will offer the possibility of living and studying in the same university environment to students, researchers and professors visiting Catalonia.

Also in 2019 began the works of the Park of the Campus, that will complete it as an urban space and will enable an image of landscaping unity. It will link the Campus with the neighborhoods of Besòs and Maresme of Barcelona and La Mina de Sant Adrià, and will facilitate connectivity with the Parc de la Pau, the beach and the area of the Port Forum, becoming in this manner a central space for the community university as well as for the inhabitants of the area.

The surface right for the construction and management of the E building, the fifth Diagonal-Besòs Campus building, was also awarded, which will house small and medium-sized companies’ projects, coworking spaces for freelance professionals and entrepreneurs, and Innovative initiatives of UPC students.

This will be a building dedicated to productive activity related to the areas of research and innovation of the Campus. And it will enable the coexistence of degrees, masters and doctorates’  teaching, public and private research and innovation, and spaces for the economic activity linked to the Campus’s research. It is expected that the works on this building will begin in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Finally, the year 2020 must be very relevant to consolidate the advancement  of the L and M plots, with the construction of the sixth Campus Diagonal-Besòs building. A space at the Campus entrance of more than 20,000 m² has been planned to locate the Barcelona Energia project, move and generate new entrepreneurial activities aimed at sustainability and initiatives of the circular economy of Barcelona Activa. In addition, it will be complemented by the location of new companies linked to the Campus or that are in their fields of knowledge.

A territory specialized in energy and resources

A large number of agents related to the field of specialization of the project (energy and resources) are established within the area where the PECT is developed. In fact it’s the area of Catalonia that brings together the largest number of environmental and energy facilities of a metropolitan character, to the point of becoming a specialized territorial network. Some of the companies present are TERSA, Districlima, Enel-Endesa and Naturgy, to which the waste water treatment plant of the AMB must be added.
